Lake Travis is a reservoir on the Colorado River and it was basically created when Mansfield Dam was constructed in 1942 by the Lower Colorado River Authority. The dam helps to regulate the water level of Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake that travel through Austin. Lake Travis is the largest man-made lake in Texas and it is a blast in the summer time. However, Austin is so warm most of the year, many enjoy it in spring and early fall as well!
Lake Travis provides those who love the water a place to boat, jet ski, swim, fish, picnic, and camp. Lady Bird Lake, which travels through downtown, is also a perfect place to canoe or fish! There are also trails lining both sides of Lady Bird Lake which are always full of joggers getting a morning run in lakeside. Don't forget to watch the bats at dusk! The bridges downtown gather a daily crowd to watch the massive swarms of bats taking to the air.
Lake Travis and Lake Austin real estate are full of dazzling properties, both that are on the river's edge or look down from a mountain peak onto the lakes. Expect to spend a pretty penny if you are looking for real estate on Lake Austin. Properties in there are easily $1+ million. Depending on the part of the lake you choose to purchase real estate you can find some relatively less expensive property.
