Zilker Park is the most well-known park in South Austin. It hosts many events, live music festivals, and has some amazing features that make it a must-see for anyone coming to Austin. Located just south of Town Lake, and east of Mopac, Zilker Park is 351 acres of scenic beauty. Zilker Park is Austin's premier park and hosts millions of people every year for all types of happenings.
On Zilker Park's soccer fields Austin City Limits takes place every fall hosting dozens of big name bands from all over the country. South By Southwest also has concerts around Zilker Park and in the neighboring Auditorium Shores. These two festivals are enormous for Austin's economy and bring in concert-goers from all over the country. Afterwards, however, Zilker Park has to do yearly revamping including resodding grass, irrigating, and field leveling to get the torn up fields back to normal.
Zilker Park is home to Barton Springs Pool, as well. Barton Springs Pool is a fresh water spring which has been dammed off to create a pool. The water is naturally cooled to 68 degrees and is extremely popular in the hot Austin summers. Other Zilker Park activities and exhibits include Zilker Botanical Gardens, the Austin Nature and Science Center, the Zilker Zephyr train ride, and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden.
If you'd like more recreation in your park, Zilker Park is very dog friendly and has a section of creek marked off past the Barton Springs Pool where dogs are allowed to take a dip and frolic. There are also basketball courts, multi-purpose fields, playground, tennis courts, barbeque pits, picnic areas, and many trails for hiking and biking.
There are communities around Zilker Park if you'd like to be close to all the fun. Neighborhoods around Zilker Park include Clarksville, Barton Hills, Treemont, Raab Inwood Hills, and Barton Heights. Homes in these neighborhoods range from $250,000 to $1.5+ million. So, there is something for everyone near Zilker Park.
